OTN Systems develops and deploys dedicated fiber optic communications networks for monorail systems all over the world. Recently, OTN Systems won the project to upgrade the existing OTN (open transport network) of the Kuala Lumpur monorail in Malaysia.

Since 2002, the Kuala Lumpur Monorail operation and excellent passenger services have relied on an OTN-150 network. The new, additional OTN network comprises N5024C nodes, providing full ethernet and IP capabilities. It adds an additional 2.5Gbps of bandwidth, on top of the originally installed capacity of 150Mbps.

To guarantee low operational costs in this mixed setup, both networks (OTN-150 and N50) can be managed and monitored by a single network management system (OMS).

The KL Monorail clearly shows how an easy migration scenario can be achieved from an existing OTN installation to a new network. The new network provides plenty of bandwidth and L3 features for all new IP applications, while the existing installation remains operational to cater for the legacy applications, thus protecting previous investments in OTN and trackside equipment.
