UK Network Rail has started work on the £50m North Wales Railway Upgrade Project in a bid to strengthen and increase reliability of the region's train services.

The project is part of the body’s railway upgrade plan and includes installation of a new signalling system on the North Wales Coast from Shotton to Colwyn Bay.

Works will also involve upgrading track layout and are expected to be complete next year, with commissioning of the new signalling equipment in March 2018.

Network Rail Wales senior project manager Kevin Roberts said: “The North Wales Railway Upgrade Project will provide greater resilience and reliability on the railway, all part of our Railway Upgrade Plan to provide a bigger and better railway for the growing number of passengers.”

As part of the upgrade project, improvements will be made at Abergele and Pensarn station.

Platform 1 at the station is planned to be extended using a new lightweight polystyrene-block solution to overcome the challenging ground conditions on-site.

It has been closed temporarily as the work is set to take place.

The station will see installation of a new LED lighting system, along with work to improve the drainage and track layout alterations.

Network Rail has collaborated with Arriva Trains Wales and Virgin Trains to minimise disruption during these upgrade works.

During weekends, the company will perform major track and signalling works at Mostyn, with replacement bus services in operation between Chester and Llandudno Junction until April.
