French company Thales has secured a contract from Bangkok Expressway Metro Public Company (BEM) and CH Karnchang Public Company (CK) to supply an automatic fare collection (AFC) system for Bangkok Metro’s Blue Line extension.
Also known as Chaloem Ratchamongkhon MRT line, the Blue Line opened in 2004.

Having already supplied AFC systems for 18 stations on the line, the new contract will see Thales installing AFC for an additional 19 stations to increase the capacity of the line and facilitate passenger service.
The Blue Line is expected to become completely operational by March 2020 and the daily ridership is estimated to increase by more than 230,000 people.
Thales plans to expand its engineering team in Thailand to help develop local industrial capacity and transfer technology.
