Railway infrastructure contractor VolkerRail has received a contract from the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) to execute the second phase of the Supertram Rail Replacement works in Sheffield, UK.
The new project is a continuation of the first phase of the Supertram Rail Replacement scheme and is set to involve the replacement of various track sections that have been subjected to wear and tear.
A total 11.5km of track is slated to be replaced under the initiative.
The first phase of the development was previously carried out by VolkerRail between 2013 and 2015.
SYPTE’s executive director Stephen Edwards said: “The Sheffield Supertram is an important part of Sheffield’s public transport network, with 12 million journeys made each year.
“It is a key asset, providing a sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative to the car and helping to support economic growth alongside other transport programmes in the city.”

By GlobalDataThe rail replacement work is expected to start across the network in April.
It is currently scheduled to be carried out during the May-to-September period for the next three years.
VolkerRail Metro and Rail projects division general manager John Pearson said: “We are delighted to continue redeveloping Sheffield’s Supertram network.
“This network is a key transportation link for commuters and we aim to ensure as little disruption as possible, while we replace track along the routes.”
Rail replacement works are set to be carried out between Middlewood and Hillsborough this year.
VolkerRail also announced the completion of track works for Network Rail in the Bloxwich area earlier this month, which have been carried out as part of the larger renewal and enhancement programme along the London North Western and East Midlands route.
The upgrade works are expected to facilitate line speed improvements across the region.
