Swedish rail and road infrastructure manager Trafikverket has contracted Efacec and its local partner to develop new-generation automatic level-crossing protection systems.

The €5m a year contract follows a global competitive tender bid and is valid for five years, with an option to be renewed for up to 30 years.

Efacec will supply its XSafe solution, which will be customised in accordance with Swedish requirements.

XSafe is designed to cater to the railroad safety-critical systems by using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware platforms, which is already used by various rail networks.

The deal is expected to help Efacec consolidate its position in Scandinavia with operations in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

In May, a consortium of Efacec and Austrian company Rhomberg secured a tender to expand the Copenhagen Metro in Denmark.

Scheduled to be completed by 2023, the expansion is expected to see construction of the track and electrification of the lines.
