Texas Central has selected Italian engineering firm Salini Impregilo to lead the civil construction consortium to build the North Texas-Houston high-speed rail project’s passenger line.
Under the arrangements, Salini Impregilo will be responsible for works that include the development of embankments, viaducts, and drainage.
With operations in more than 50 countries, Salini Impregilo has been associated with building more than 4,000 miles of railway infrastructure worldwide.
In the US, it operates through Lane Construction, a US-based company that merged with Salini Impregilo in 2016.
Texas Central CEO Carlos Aguilar said: “Salini Impregilo’s knowledge and experience in designing, building and leading large-scale railway projects across the world is impressive, and its presence in the US market with Lane is also strategic for the project.
“Their inclusion in the consortium highlights the stature of the Texas project and the interest of global infrastructure companies to be part of America’s first high-speed train.”
Texas Central also announced the limited notice to proceed (LNTP) agreement, which will enable the design-build participants to advance with the front-end engineering and design of the train’s civil infrastructure.
Participants will also perform analysis to determine construction costs and schedule estimates, as well as optimise execution approaches and strategies.
Once complete, the high-speed train project will connect North Texas, the Brazos Valley and Houston. It will be based on Central Japan Railway’s Tokaido Shinkansen train network.
Currently, the US Federal Railroad Administration is conducting the final environmental review of the high-speed project to finalise the route and its construction timeline.
