Swedish independent train haulage provider Hector Rail has acquired 15 six-axle class 151 freight locomotives from DB Schenker, the rail freight division of Deutsche Bahn.

These vehicles are claimed to offer rail freight operators a cost-effective alternative to leasing new locomotives.

"The locomotives have been acquired to provide a cost-efficient refurbishment and secure spare part supply for future operations."

Capable of travelling at a maximum speed of 120km/h, the 15kV locomotives date from 1972 to 1978, and have a nominal output of 6,288kW and starting tractive effort of 395kN.

DB will complete delivery of the Class 151 locomotives by the end of 2017.

According to the company, the deal to buy these locomotives makes them an attractive solution for short-distance heavy transports.

They can also be used as an alternative for other segments in the railway market such as intermodal transports.

Hector Rail operates in the European rail transport market with about 50 locomotives.

It offers locomotives and drivers to freight customers who need whole unit trains hauled between two places with a regular timetable.

Hector Rail currently operates around five million kilometres a year in Sweden and Norway.

The company operated its first train in December 2004, and it began operating in Denmark and running trains from Sweden to Germany during January 2008.
