Polish rail vehicle manufacturer Pesa Bydgoszcz has selected MTU, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, to supply ten series 4000 locomotive diesel engines.

MTU’s 16-cylinder type 4000 R84 units will be used by Pesa to power its type Gama 111Db passenger locomotives, which are scheduled to enter service with Polish rail company PKP Intercity.

PKP Intercity had awarded Pesa a $43.4m contract to supply 10 four-axle diesel-electric locomotives earlier this year.

These will operate on services from Elk to Korsze, Olecko and Suwalki, Rzeszów to Zamosc and Zagórz, Krzyz to Gorzów Wielkopolski, and Kostrzyn and Pila.

Featuring a two-stage turbocharging technology, the MTU drive units are capable of delivering high charge-air pressures for enhanced power with minimum particulate emissions.

Designed to offer a 2,400kW output that takes the Gama locomotives up to a top speed of 160km/h, the diesel engines use exhaust gas recycling, common rail injection and diesel particulate filters to meet EU stage IIIB standards.

Previously MTU supplied the type 6H 1800 R85L powerpacks for Pesa’s twelve Link railcars for Regentalbahn, a subsidiary of Netinera Deutschland, in Bavaria, Germany.

In addition, Pesa will conduct running trials with Link railcars powered by four prototype rail powerpacks that are based on MTU’s new series 1600 engines from mid-2014.
