UK rail transport company Network Rail (NR) has completed the renovation and upgrade of platform two at Liverpool’s Moorfields station as part of its £12m investment.

The Moorfields station improvements are part of a £40m Railway Upgrade Plan carried out by NR in close collaboration with public transport company Merseytravel and Merseyside's passenger rail operator Merseyrail.

Moorfields is the last of the five underground stations that has undergone redevelopments under the Railway Upgrade Plan, the others being James Street, Liverpool Central, Lime Street and Hamilton Square.

The third and final platform of Moorfields station to be upgraded will reopen after a three-month closure in a bid to transform the environment for travellers.

The station upgrade will enable customers to have a smoother and more pleasant journey while travelling to and from Liverpool’s business district in the heart of the city.

Network Rail area director Terry Strickland said: “The platform work that we have carried out will provide passengers with a better and brighter station environment. Once all work is completed by the end of the year, it will be a station to be proud of.

“The work represents investment being made across the North West as part of our multibillion pound, nationwide Railway Upgrade Plan, which is providing passengers with a better, more reliable railway.

"The platform work that we have carried out will provide passengers with a better and brighter station environment."

“We are committed to improving the railway in order to meet the growing number of people travelling by rail and this is the latest example of the benefits this record level of investment is delivering.”

As part of the project, the entire station will be renovated with new flooring, lighter and brighter walls, improved lighting, as well as upgraded walkways.

Nine of the escalators that operate between the concourse and the platforms are also being improved in order to meet the growing passenger numbers that is predicted to double over the coming years from the current 6.5 million passengers using the station every year.

Work to upgrade the escalators is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
