The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the US has signed a new licence agreement with inMOTION Wireless to install a new Wi-Fi system on its commuter rail line network.
Under the agreed terms, inMOTION Wireless will develop a $5.6m system that will enhance the availability and quality of the existing Wi-Fi service.
The scope of the agreement also covers the installation, operation and maintenance of a neutral, private and dedicated Wi-Fi network on all MBTA passenger coaches and ferries.
The new Wi-Fi service will also be installed on MBTA’s South, North and Back Bay Stations.
MBTA general manager Beverly Scott said: "While the introduction of new locomotives and new coaches will continue to improve on-time performance rates, customer service initiatives such as Wi-Fi and eTicketing will make the overall commuting experience an even better one."
Work on the Wi-Fi system installation will begin later this year and the full system will be in place within 18 months.
MBTA customers will be offered with free access to the internet and a live television feed.
Premium Wi-Fi service will also be available for $15 a month, which will allow customers to stream data and video.
