Infineon technologies and Bombardier Transportation have signed a partnership to supply drive electronics for advanced rail vehicles.
Under the agreement Infineon will supply power semiconductor components to Bombardier over the next five years, enabling the energy-efficient control of electric motors in locomotives, high-speed trains, underground and urban railways.
Infineon will supply new generation IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) modules, which are designed to meet the application requirements in advanced trains and metro rail systems.
IGBT modules are known as power semiconductors and are used in high-voltage operation between several hundreds to thousands of volts.
The two companies also plan to develop drive electronics for trains to optimise energy efficiency and reliability.
The power semiconductors provide high efficiency and fast switching with high-current handling capability, and control multi-megawatt electric motors with minimum power losses.
