JSC TransTelecom, a subsidiary of Kazakhstan’s railway system operator Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZh), has awarded a $62m contract to HP Kazakhstan to help reduce energy use on the country’s rail network.
Under the 13-year contract, HP will work with JSC TransTelecom to implement and support the KTZh Traction Power Dispatch Automated Control System on the rail network.

HP will act as a prime contractor to implement the automated railway energy management system (REMS) to improve energy efficiency on the network.
REMS is based on Ipesoft technology and Ipesoft devices will be installed to measure fuel usage, temperature, speed and other operational indicators on 2,000 locomotives running on the rail network.
The data feed generated from the devices will be fed into REMS for analysis, reports and recommendations to improve energy usage.

REMS will then communicate real-time information to dispatchers, railway engineers and managers to address the issues immediately.

By GlobalDataKTZh expects the system to reduce electrical energy consumption by 7% and diesel fuel consumption by 13%.
JSC TransTelecom chief executive officer and vice president Askar Mamin said that the railway is one of the largest and most critical components of the Kazakhstan transportation infrastructure and improvement of its efficiency and reliability is strategically important.
"We are confident that HP’s expertise will help us take advantage of today’s innovative technologies, to have a positive impact on the railway operations and all who depend on KTZ," Mamin said.
HP will provide applications transformation and integration services to connect REMS to existing systems to help KTZh analyse available information and reduce energy use.
HP will manage the system after implementation and provide hardware, including its ProLiant blade servers, storage and networking to modernise the KTZh data centre.
After installation of the hardware, HP will provide Infrastructure Outsourcing Services to efficiently manage the system.
