Hong Kong’s medium-capacity MTR South Island Line (SIL) railway that connects Admiralty Station to the Southern District has entered revenue service.

Through three separate contracts, French rail transport company Alstom has delivered signalling system, track works, overhead line electrification, traction and train control management system (TCMS) for the project.

Being Hong Kong’s first urban metro line run by fully automatic operation (FAO), MTR SIL will serve the hugely populated district of Ap Lei Chau.

The 7km line will take passengers from Admiralty Station to the Southern District of Hong Kong Island in 11 minutes through four new stations.

The new stations are Lei Tung, Wong Chuk Hang, Ocean Park and South Horizons.

Alstom has delivered communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling technology to SIL, along with supplying Urbalis 400 that will facilitate FAO, as well as improve rail service with a high level of reliability and added flexibility in train deployment.

The company has also provided its track works and overhead contact solutions, as well as the company’s OpTONIX traction systems and train control management system (TCMS) for 30 metro cars.
