Canada-based Cando Rail Services is planning to build a new rail terminal in Kamloops as part of its expansion into British Columbia (BC).

The company will build the terminal at a recently purchased 89-acre parcel of land in Kamloops and it will also serve as its headquarters in BC.

The new terminal will have the capacity for 1,000 railcar storage spots and provide transloading, material handling, engineering, track and mechanical services.

"This is an important step for us as we expand into the BC market."

The construction site located at Mission Flats Road provides access to mainline traffic from Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CP) running through Kamloops.

Cando Rail Services CEO Brian Cornick said: "Our long-range plan is to build an extensive rail terminal at the location that includes 80,000ft of track, transload areas, and engineering and mechanical servicing areas.

"We’ll start with storage tracks first, building to have the first 250 spots ready by this June. This is an important step for us as we expand into the BC market."

The company currently operates railcar storage at six other Canadian locations across Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The company said that the property, the former Weyerhaeuser sawmill site, also provides access to the growing Port of Prince Rupert.

Cornick further noted: "We recognise Kamloops already has a sizable amount of rail traffic. It makes sense for us to build our regional hub here as we expand our services right across the country.

"The city and Venture Kamloops have been great to work with. We can’t wait to get started."

The company is focused on providing industrial rail services at more than 18 sites across Canada, managing several facilities and terminals, as well as safely handling products such as biodiesel and forest products.

The firm’s engineering and track services division also serves a Class 1 railroads, automotive, forestry and mining companies.

The company currently employs more than 400 employees across various divisions and operations, and it has more than 15 mobile track service crews throughout Canada and owns/operates three short line railways.
