Zefiro

Bombardier Transportation has won the iF Product Design Award and the Good Design Award for its very high speed (VHS) train being developed for railway operators in Europe, Asia and North America.

The company claims the Zefiro train platform is economical and environmentally friendly, featuring sustainable technology and aerodynamic design to reduce energy consumption.

Bombardier Transportation Zefiro project Industrial Design team leader Michael Sohn said these awards are testament to the Zefiro VHS train’s innovative approach to high-speed travel.

"As well as being extremely energy efficient, the train’s shaping of windows, lights, split-lines and graphics creates a distinctive appearance that sets new standards in the railway industry for sustainable transportation and passenger comfort," Sohn said.

The Zefiro high speed train platform is available in three variations, with the Zefiro 250 being a sleeper version of the VHS train, considered to be one of the fastest sleeper trains in the world and currently being operated in China.

The V300 Zefiro is a high-speed model and features built-in interoperability to suit the operational requirements of eight high-speed European rail networks, including those of France, Germany and the Netherlands.

Bombardier Transportation has applied an aluminium body for driving cars and trailer cars in the high-speed segment in Europe, resulting in reduced weight, lower track wear and compliance to safety requirements.

Other features include the company’s own technologies such as ECO 4, an EBI drive 50 driver assistance system and Bombardier’s Thermo Efficient Climatisation System.

Zefiro platforms are available in four scalable traction power systems, including 1.5kV DC, 3kV DC, 15kV AC and 25kV AC, which give an operating speed of 250kmph to 380kmph.

Bombardier said the Zefiro incorporates the open tube concept, which can accommodate up to 1,336 seats in a 16 car setting and about 650 seats in an eight car setting. The iF Product Design Award, from Germany, recognises design quality, finish, choice of materials, degree of innovation, environmental impact, functionality, safety and brand value.
