Ontario transportation agency for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) Metrolinx has awarded a $328m order to Bombardier Transportation for the supply of a further 125 BiLevel commuter rail cars to serve Toronto’s GO Transit system.

Production of the new vehicles is scheduled to start in Q2 of 2018 in Thunder Bay, a city in Ontario. Final delivery is expected in Q1, 2020.

Thunder Bay's atikokan member of provincial parliament Bill Mauro said: “Bombardier is Thunder Bay’s largest private sector employer.

“This investment is the latest in a long series of investments by our government in mass transit and will help ensure that a significant workforce remains at Bombardier contributing greatly to the economy of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario.”

The new double-deck commuter rail cars feature modern and upgraded door and air conditioning systems, improved energy efficiency and enhanced amenities, with an aim to provide improved passenger service.

The current order will support GO Transit in its overall service expansion plan to meet the growing passenger numbers.
