Alstom coradia line

The German Federal Railway Office (Eisenbahn-Bundesamt) has granted operational approval for Alstom’s 91 new Coradia Lint diesel multiple units (DMU), which are expected to begin scheduled operations in December.

Of the 91 regional trains, 63 will be operated by vlexx and the other 28 will be owned by Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen and operated by erixx.

Alstom received contracts worth nearly €120m and €300m from erixx and vlexx respectively, in December 2011 and September 2012.

Alstom Transport in Germany managing director Martin Lange said: "We obtained the homologations for the vehicles in close partnership with the Eisenbahn-Bundesamt.

"This is an outstanding performance that underlines the efficiency of the reforms for the faster homologation of railway vehicles, which were introduced a year ago. Working alongside the customers, we now have to focus on a punctual commissioning of the vehicles."

Vlexx will operate 45 Coradia Lint 54 trains with 162 seats, and 18 Coradia Lint 81 trains with a seating capacity of 264.

The trains will connect the regional network in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse with Rheinhessen, Nahe, Westpfalz, Rhine-Main and the centres of Mainz, Rüsselsheim and Frankfurt, as well as Frankfurt Airport and Saarland.

Erixx’s 28 Coradia Lint 54 trains will have 157 seats and will be used on the diesel network in south-east Lower Saxony.

The DMUs will serve the lines Hanover-Hildesheim-Bad Harzburg, Uelzen-Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel-Vienenburg-Bad Harzburg / Goslar and Lüneburg-Dannenberg, Germany.

Developed and constructed at the company’s facility in Salzgitter, Germany, all 91 trains are capable of reaching speeds of up to 140km/h.

Around 770 Coradia Lint regional multiple units have been sold by Alstom since 1998 in Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Canada.
