The project integrates the Smartlock solution with new equipment designed and produced by the Mihajlo Pupin Institute.

Russian RZD International awarded the project to Alstom.

Alstom Romania, Bulgaria and Republic of Moldova managing director Gabriel Stanciu said: “We are extremely proud to have succeeded in delivering this pioneering project in just 20 months together with our local partner, the Mihajlo Pupin Institute, in a challenging environment.

"This is one of the first implementations of a modern interlocking system in Serbia, where the signalling and operating rules are very different from other European countries."

At present, a combined 60 passenger and freight trains use the line daily, with this number expected to reach 136 trains by 2020. 

Alstom’s Smartlock 400 interlocking solution has been installed in more than 25 countries with different signalling principles.

Smartlock 400 interfaces directly with trackside equipment without the need for intermediate relays.  

Alstom’s Romania team was responsible for the engineering and project management while the products delivery and project coordination was taken over by the team in Bologna, Italy.
