Dutch national railway company Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) has introduced its TrainWise customer application, which allows its commuters to track the capacity of the trains.
Launched officially in November last year, this web-based TrainWise is the second customer-facing application that has been built by NS using the low-code platform of Mendix, a Siemens business.
By informing how packed a train is in real-time, the application enables passengers to board a different train if they want to avoid the crowded ones.
After logging into the application, passengers will have to select the departure and arrival stations, along with the departure time.
The app will then display the projected occupancy rate and notify passengers about the changes in occupancy.
NS product owner Robin van Veen said: “Initially, we looked at existing software to handle reservations, but these solutions didn’t provide the functionality we needed. We already worked with Mendix for several internal apps, and our experienced team knows what the platform is capable of. It was also important for us to act quickly. Therefore, we decided we would leverage the Mendix low-code platform and build our own application.

TrainWise was tested in a pilot project by NS on the Amsterdam-Zandvoort line last year.
The Dutch national railway company has developed 35 applications with Mendix since 2018.
