The Department of Environment (DOE) has approved the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the Kuala Lumpur – Singapore High Speed Rail (KL-SG HSR) project.

The EIA report, a mandatory requirement under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, aimed to identify, predict and assess the environmental impact of this high speed rail project.

It also outlines the necessary measures that should be taken to minimise the environmental consequences of the construction, as well as operational phases.

“The EIA report approval marks a significant development that paves the way forward for the KL-SG HSR project.”

Submitted to the DOE on 13 December last year, the report was under one-month mandatory display from 27 December 2017 to 25 January 2018 for public feedback and review.

Following the public consultation, the final EIA report was submitted to the DOE incorporating the feedback received from the public, government agencies and the DOE.

The approval is expected to enable MyHSR, the company responsible for the development and implementation of the KL-SG HSR project, to advance to securing Railway Scheme approval.

MyHSR CEO Dato’ Mohd Nur Ismal bin Mohamed Kamal said: “The EIA report approval marks a significant development that paves the way forward for the KL-SG HSR project.

“We have developed the necessary measures to address and minimise the potential impacts throughout the life-cycle of the project, which consist of pre-construction, during construction, and operations.”

A strategic project between the governments of Malaysia and Singapore, the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore HSR will enable rapid connectivity between the two cities as well as support business links.

The project is expected to start commercial service from 31 December 2026.
