Five construction firms have submitted bids as part of a Request for Qualification (RfQ) for the construction of the Rs88bn ($1.35bn) Visakhapatnam metro project in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The bidding process was initiated by Amaravati Metro Rail (AMRC) for the construction 43km-long Visakhapatnam Metro Rail (VMR) network.

The five firms are Adani Enterprises, TRIL Urban Transport, the Shapoorji Pallonji and Company, ESSEL Infraprojects and IL&FS Rail, reported media sources.

"We will take at least a month to thoroughly study their bid documents before shortlisting the eligible firms for further notification of RfP."

AMRC is now set to evaluate the bids and then shortlist the companies that are eligible for a Request for Proposal (RfP).

AMRC managing director N P Ramakrishna Reddy was quoted by Times of India as saying: “We will take at least a month to thoroughly study their bid documents before shortlisting the eligible firms for further notification of RfP.

“We hope all these five would be shortlisted for the RfP, which will be invited in April this year.”

Reddy noted that the receipt of RfP submissions from the chosen companies and the subsequent selection of the preferred developer are expected to be completed in roughly five months.

In addition, Reddy clarified that the firms must possess prior experience in the execution of large-scale, public-private partnership (PPP) projects.

The shortlisted firms will be able to apply for the RfP in collaboration with their partner companies.

VMR will be developed under a PPP model, which will see the government provide the necessary funds for the development, while the selected private firm will be responsible for the development of non-civil infrastructure, operations and maintenance for a 35-year period.
