Alstom has secured a contract to provide maintenance support for 12 Class 92 locomotives, which are used to pull Class 92 Caledonian Sleeper carriages in the UK.
The £15m contract, awarded by GB Railfreight (GBRf), commits Alstom to providing maintenance services for 12 years as of this year.
All the locomotives will be maintained at Alstom’s Wembley depot.
Alstom UK & Ireland managing director Nick Crossfield said: “It is important the Caledonian Sleeper services are well maintained so that guests can continue to enjoy a highly reliable service and all the benefits the trains offer.
“Our new contract with GBRf will mean we are responsible for the entire train, delivering seamless maintenance of both locomotives and coaches.”
The contract expands Alstom’s existing portfolio from coach maintenance to managing the maintenance of both carriages and locomotives for the Caledonian Sleeper services.
It is also expected to streamline and simplify maintenance processes as the entire train will be managed at one facility.
Alstom will continue to offer its maintenance services after new Caledonian Sleepers carriages are introduced into the service later this year.
GBRf managing director John Smith said: “The new Caledonian Sleeper service will be a world-class journey experience, and the performance of the locomotives is clearly of the highest importance to delivering this service for passengers.
“We are delighted Alstom will be maintaining the fleet and supporting the delivery of this service.”
The maintenance contract is expected to secure employment for the production team at the Wembley depot, as well as support several additional roles.
