Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has granted a civil contract to Samsung C&T Corporation for the construction and design of the Hougang interchange station and tunnels for Phase I of the Cross Island Line (CRL).
The total value of the contract stands at nearly $604m.

The scope of the contract includes the design and construction of the Hougang interchange station and tunnels, along with modification work on the present Hougang station along the North East Line (NEL).
The construction of the CRL Hougang station is expected to commence in Q4 2021, with the passenger service expected to start in 2030.
Samsung C&T Corporation is currently constructing the Xilin station on the Downtown Line 3 (DTL3) Extension, Caldecott and Marine Parade stations on the Thomson-East Coast Line, and some portions of tunnels along the North-South Corridor.
The company was previously involved in the construction of Expo and Upper Changi stations along DTL3, and Hougang and Kovan stations along NEL.

By GlobalDataAs Singapore’s eighth MRT line, CRL will connect major centres such as Punggol Digital District, Jurong Lake District, and Changi region.
Almost half of CRL’s stations will function as interchanges with other rail lines.
The 29km-long CRL1 consists of 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill, serving both residential and industrial areas.
Detailed studies are currently being conducted for the upcoming phases of CRL.
Last month, LTA announced that it would acquire 17 two-car trains to increase the capacity of the Sengkang-Punggol LRT’s (SPLRT).
After the acquisition, the number of two-car trains in the SPLRT fleet will increase to twice its current fleet size.
