Infraestruturas de Portugal has awarded a contract to Thales Portugal and Portuguese electric utility company SISINT for its control-command system.

This project is part of Infraestruturas de Portugal’s 2020 rail plan, which aims to increase rail safety. The new system is expected to enhance road safety with the integration and automation of level crossings.

Worth more than €40.5m, the contract includes the design, supply, assembly and maintenance of the system in the Caíde-Marco section of Douro Line, Aveiro-Vilar Formoso Railway Link in the Atlantic Corridor and Évora – Elvas – Caia section on the Sines / Elvas Rail Link.

It also includes the assembly and maintenance of the European Train Control System (ETCS) and signalling systems on different sections of the National Railway Network (RFN).

Infraestruturas de Portugal has said that the system will be interoperable on cross-border rail sections, offer more flexibility and will reduce the dependency on humans for rail line safety. It will also offer uniformity with the current systems on the RFN and improved operating conditions.

Last year, the Portuguese Government approved €168.21m to acquire 22 regional trains for the state-owned transport company Comboios de Portugal (CP). The procurement of the new vehicles will allow CP to support operations on the regional lines.
