The contract is worth about €120m and was awarded to Alstom, which will build and assemble the trains at its Salzgitter factory. DB Regio has placed the order on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport.

These trains will run on rail lines from Karlsruhe to Heilbronn and Achern, as well as to Herrenberg via Freudenstadt, from December 2022. They will be gradually introduced into the fleet.

The trains adhere to the operational requirements of the region and will optimise passenger experience. They also feature high-performance Wi-Fi, several multi-purpose areas and a large bicycle area.

Upon delivery, the trains will become the property of the Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW) and are leased by DB Regio for the 13-year transport contract term.

Alstom Germany and Austria managing director Jörg Nikutta said: “Passengers in the Karlsruhe region can look forward to modern, proven and reliable trains.

In a separate development, Alstom delivered the first batch of Coradia Stream ‘Pop’ trains that will operate in the Italian regions of Veneto and Liguria.

In 2016, Italian train operator Trenitalia awarded a contract worth €900m to Alstom for the supply of 150 new medium-capacity regional trains. Of the total trains, 31 trains are allotted to Veneto, while 15 will be sent to operate in Liguria. Currently, 14 Coradia Stream trains operate in Emilia Romagna.
