The Government of Victoria in Australia has completed maintenance work on the regional tracks near the Southern Cross Station in Melbourne.

The major work included the replacement of two important units of track near platforms 3, 4 and 5.

These tracks form a key part of the network and replacing them will help in alleviating risk.

The A$3.4m project employed 60 workers.

While the maintenance work was being carried out, trains serving the Ballarat and Albury lines were replaced with coaches to reduce the frequency of trains accessing the station.

The workers also carried out work on the standard gauge trains while Australian Rail Track Corporation removed the temporary restrictions of speed on the track from Seymour to Albury.

Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne said: “The track that was replaced at Southern Cross Station is one of the most used and most complex pieces of track on the regional network, which is why this maintenance work is so important.

“Replacing the aging track with new modern infrastructure will improve performance and reduce the risk of delays or disruptions due to track faults in the area.”

Last month, the government announced an A$534m ($361m) second package of works on the Sunbury line.

In September, the government asked manufacturers to share ideas for its next-generation trams and trains.

With a policy of at least 50% local content in its public transport rolling stock, the government planned to conduct design and engineering workshops in the next few months.
