Swiss construction company Implenia has secured a SEK3.5bn ($360m) contract to deliver the twin-track rail expansion project between Varberg and Hamra in Sweden.
Under the contract, Implenia will be responsible for planning and construction of a 2.8km conventional tunnel, a 450m cut-and-cover tunnel and a 1.3km cutting, as well as several bridges and a railway station.

Laying 2.7km of track and building a freight train station are also part of the work package.
Completion of the construction works is expected in six years.
The trains are expected to run on the new rail line, including the tunnels beneath Varberg’s city centre from 2024.
Implenia was also associated with the initial planning and preparation of the scheme, under a SEK200m ($20.36m) contract awarded by Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) last year.

In a statement, the Swiss firm said: “Collaboration between Implenia’s different divisions has been improved by the Group’s new organisational structure, and Trafikverket will be supplied with all the capabilities required for this major project – from planning and preparation to execution, from a single source.”

It is headquartered in Dietlikon near Zurich and employs more than 10,000 people.
