Duos Technologies Group has received a purchase order to deliver its Automated Pantograph Inspection System (apis) to Metra, a commuter railway system in Chicago, US.

The system is designed to capture high-resolution digital video imagery of critical pantographs, and will be installed on top of passenger railcars.

It inspects the pantographs, which supplies current from overhead electrical wires to the train, for potential damages, including cracks, chips and bends. Any defects identified can be repaired to prevent potential track downtime.

The video images procured by the system are transmitted for remote monitoring to a command and control software platform called centraco. The platform enables operational workflow for inspection, alerts and maintenance orders.

Overall, the Automated Pantograph Inspection System is designed to span four tracks.

Duos chairman and CEO Gianni Arcaini said: “Chicago Metra has long been a trusted partner of ours, and we’re looking forward to expanding our relationship together.

“More broadly, being awarded another contract further validates the growing offering of solutions we’ve been developing for the passenger rail market.

“Going forward, we’ll be working closely with Chicago Metra to increase their track safety, as well as reduce downtime over the coming years.”

The apis system is expected to be installed in the third quarter of this year. Installation works will be carried out by the company’s operating subsidiary Duos Technologies.

In March, Metra issued a request for proposals (RFP) to procure at least 200 railcars in a step to manage growing ridership. The proposals will be due in August and the deal is expected to be signed by the end of the year.
