CAF has received a contract to install a real-time remote monitoring and condition-based maintenance (CBM) system on Northern UK rail trains.

The scope of the contract involves the delivery of its LeadMind digital platform for the 101 Civity regional trains. CAF will also install real-time and advanced analytics functionalities on Northern’s Class 170 and 158 train fleet.

Overall, the system will be deployed on 431 vehicles.

The deployment of the LeadMind digital platform enables operators to provide a more competitive service. It is a modular, open and scalable product based on machine learning and big data technologies.

The system procures, assesses and interprets data from rolling stock, the operator and all associated infrastructures. Subsequently, the data is compiled into valuable information, enabling effective fleet management, operation and maintenance.

According to the company, the system provides all data through a user-friendly format, thereby streamlining the decision-making process.

Additionally, it can be customised according to the requirements of a client.

Several railway operators including Euskotren, Trenitalia, Metro de Santiago, SAR and Amsterdam Tramway (GVB) have already deployed LeadMind solution in their fleets.

Last month, CAF secured four train maintenance contracts in Spain and Saudi Arabia with a combined value of more than €240m.

The four contracts were awarded by Renfe and Bilbao Metro in Spain, and Saudi Railways Organisation (SRO) and Saudi Railway Company (SAR) in Saudi Arabia.

CAF’s maintenance business employs more than 2,300 people. Currently, the business is working on more than 50 contracts across 13 countries.
