Delhi Metro Rail (DMRC) has opened the final major section of the automated Line 7 for passenger operations.

The Lajpat Nagar–Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 Metro section stretches 9.7km and comprises three underground and two elevated stations. The section will offer connectivity between the southern and eastern regions of the city.

Delhi Metro Rolling Stock and Signalling director S S Joshi said: “The opening of this last section of our new, fully automated Line 7 is a major milestone in the expansion of integrated public transportation in Delhi.

“The line is already easing pressure on the existing network and is improving travel for millions of commuters.”

Known as the Pink Line, Delhi Metro Line 7 started operations in March last year. The line is equipped with Bombardier CITYFLO 650 driverless rail control technology.

The communications-based train control solution CITYFLO 650 utilises modern radio networks and moving block operations to offer centralised train supervision and reliable automatic operations.

The Delhi Metro Line 7 is capable of running trains every one and a half minutes. It can support train speeds of up to 85km/h.

Bombardier Transportation Rail Control Solutions India head Rasmi Ranjan Ray said: “It has been a momentous experience to see the start of services on Delhi’s first fully automated metro line.

“This latest section to open marks a major milestone for DMRC in its introduction of driverless, high-capacity services.”

Running adjacent to the city’s Ring Road, Delhi Metro Line 7 features a 58.5km circular route from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar Station.

DMRC has opened 96km of metro sections in the last year, including the Line 7 extension.

Delhi Metro includes 327km of rail network with 236 stations.
