Alstom has delivered the first in a series of 23 Citadis X05 trams for the urban community of Caen la Mer in France.

The tram was delivered to the Tram Operation and Maintenance Centre at Fleury-sur-Orne and has been received by the elected representatives of the community and Alstom.

The delivery is based on a €52m order secured by Alstom in November 2016.

The Citadis X05 tram is 33m long and features six double doors on each side.

Designed to carry more than 210 passengers, the tram is equipped with LED lighting with diffusers to homogenise the source of light.

The tram is also equipped with six extra-large passenger information screens, and large windows that cover 45% of the vehicle.

In addition, the Citadis X05 tram is developed to provide USB charging points.

The energy-efficient vehicle will be able to climb slopes with inclines of more than 8%, as well as feature standardised, more accessible components to provide the residents of Caen la Merwith reliable, readily available material and an improved alternative to the existing system.

In a statement, Alstom said: “Eight of Alstom’s 12 sites in France are involved in the design and manufacture of the Citadis tram for Caen la Mer. La Rochelle is responsible for the project management, design, assembly and testing, Ornans for the motors, Le Creusot for the bogies, Tarbes for the traction drives, Valenciennes for the interior layout, Villeurbanne for the on-board electronics, Aix en Provence for the tachometry and Saint-Ouen for the design.

Alstom has so far sold more than 2,500 Citadis trams to approximately 50 cities worldwide, including 23 in France.

The company has also secured orders from Nice, France; Sydney, Australia; and Lusail, Qatar to provide the X05 version of the Citadis tram.
