Siemens Mobility has secured a contract from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) in California, US, to provide eight S70 streetcars.

The contract includes an option for up to ten additional streetcars. It will also see Siemens supplying spare parts and tools to OCTA.

Delivery of the streetcars is scheduled to take place in 2021.

Once delivery is completed, Siemens will provide systems support and training to operators and maintenance technicians of the cars.

OCTA’s new streetcars will be designed to carry out emission-free operation. They will incorporate Siemens S70 light rail vehicle features that are being used in various mass transit and regional services connecting suburbs to the US cities such as in Houston, Charlotte, San Diego, among others.

The S70 platform is also designed to operate in inner-city areas, including Salt Lake City and Atlanta, which are currently using digital rail analytics to run streetcars.

In addition, the Siemens S70 streetcars are expected to sustainably link downtown areas with key business areas and government districts in Orange County.

Once deployed, the vehicles will primarily serve Santa Ana’s central business district and connect various OCTA bus routes and Metrolink regional / commuter rails.

The streetcars are estimated to carry more than 7,300 passengers per day within their first year of operation.

Depending upon the ridership demand for the vehicles, the streetcars can be converted to conduct light rail transit operation.
