The Government of Western Australia has allocated A$3.6bn ($2.71bn) for the Metronet passenger rail overhaul programme in a bid to upgrade transportation system in the city of Perth.
The 2018-19 Metronet Budget has allocated A$536m ($403.7m) to extend the Thornlie Line to Cockburn Station on the Mandurah Line. It also involves the construction of two new stations at Nicholson Road and Ranford Road.

The budget provided A$420m ($316.3m) to extend the northern suburbs rail line to Yanchep, as well as construct three stations at Yanchep, Eglinton and Alkimos.
Western Australia’s planning commission will invest another A$100m ($75.3m) in the project.
The Forrestfield-Airport Link project received A$515m ($387.85m) in this year’s budget. The investment will be used to develop a turn back facility at Claremont and upgrade Bayswater Station.
Furthermore, another A$50m ($37.7m) has been provided to carry out planning work for other Metronet projects such as the Morley-Ellenbrook Line, Byford Rail Extension and Midland Station Project.

By GlobalDataWestern Australia premier Mark McGowan said: “My Government’s number one priority is WA jobs and delivering Metronet is a key element of our plan to boost our local economy.
“Having secured an additional A$1.05bn in Federal funding for Metronet, we are delivering these projects with minimal impact on the State’s financial position.”
The budget also made provisions to remove dangerous railway crossings in the state and allocated A$69m ($51.9m) to remove the Denny Avenue level crossing in Kelmscott.
Additionally, around A$508m ($382.6m) has been earmarked to procure 102 new railcars, in 17 six-car sets, for the Metronet projects.
The deliveries of these rail cars are expected to begin in 2021.
Additional funding has also been allocated for further 24 six-car sets, which will replace A-series trains used on heritage lines.
