Western Australia premier Mark McGowan said: “My Government’s number one priority is WA jobs and delivering Metronet is a key element of our plan to boost our local economy.

“Having secured an additional A$1.05bn in Federal funding for Metronet, we are delivering these projects with minimal impact on the State’s financial position.”

The budget also made provisions to remove dangerous railway crossings in the state and allocated A$69m ($51.9m) to remove the Denny Avenue level crossing in Kelmscott.

Additionally, around A$508m ($382.6m) has been earmarked to procure 102 new railcars, in 17 six-car sets, for the Metronet projects.

The deliveries of these rail cars are expected to begin in 2021.

Additional funding has also been allocated for further 24 six-car sets, which will replace A-series trains used on heritage lines.
