Indonesia has introduced a new rail service from Jakarta city centre to its international airport, which is expected to decongest the city’s roads and highways and provide a faster transportation alternative for travellers.
The new rail service project involved an investment of nearly $369m and was inaugurated by the Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The 34km-long rail route will connect Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten Province, with two other stations, including the Sudirman Baru station situated in Jakarta’s business district.
Construction works for the project originally began in 2014.
The line will comprise five stops and is expected to become completely operational next year following the addition of three additional kilometres to the route, reported media sources.
The total rail journey to the airport via the network is expected to take nearly an hour, reducing the current driving time by around half.

By GlobalDataWidodo was quoted by asia.nikkei.com as saying: “We hope the public will use less private cars and instead move to safe and convenient public transports that we can use together across greater Jakarta and to the airport.”
The train is scheduled to cover 42 single trips per day from morning to midnight.
The route represents the second airport railway network in the country.
Indonesia’s first airport railway connects Kualanamu Airport in North Sumatra with the Medan airport rail link, which commenced operation in 2013.
A joint venture between state-owned railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia and airport operator Angkasa Pura II known as Railink is responsible for the operation of both the country’s airport rail routes.
