The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has entered a strategic partnership with Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) in China to establish a new Joint Innovation Center for Rail Transit Safety Monitoring Technology at PolyU Shenzhen Base.
PolyU Base (Shenzhen), a registered legal entity of PolyU in the Chinese mainland, signed a collaboration agreement with Southwest Jiaotong University’s China SWJTU Railway Development (CSRD) in support of the development.

PolyU Research Development vice-president Ir professor Alex Wai said: “The signing of the agreement means closer collaboration in developing new railway transit safety-monitoring technology, and PolyU will further participate in the nation’s high-speed rail projects through its PolyU Shenzhen Base.
“I believe this strategic partnership will take the development of China’s high-speed rail to higher levels of excellence.”
The establishment of the new Joint Innovation Center is expected to see both PolyU and CSRD leverage their expertise in order to boost the collaboration on research development, which will help enhance rail safety and meet the growing demand for rail transit options across the country.
The Joint Innovation Center’s studies will cover a wide range of areas, including research and development regarding structural health monitoring (SHM) systems customised for rail tracks and subgrades, as well as SHM systems tailored for high-speed trains and their components.

PolyU and CSRD have previously collaborated on several other large projects, including the Beijing Shanghai high-speed Railway (HSR) in 2012 and the Lanzhou-Xinjiang HSR project in 2014.
