Bombardier Transportation has won a $214m contract from Mumbai Railway Vikas (MRVC), a joint venture between the Indian Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra state, to provide rail propulsion systems and control equipment.
The contract involves design, manufacturing, delivery and testing of MITRAC propulsion and control equipment, as well as additional equipment including fans, compressors, passenger information systems and high voltage instruments.

Under the agreement, Bombardier will design, develop and manufacture, as well as test, commission electrical infrastructure, microprocessor-based propulsion systems and supply of the electric multiple unit (EMU).
The company said the MITRAC propulsion and control equipment provides sustainable mobility and reliable operation under the adverse environmental conditions of Mumbai which bring high temperatures, humidity and heavy rain leading to flooding of tracks.
Bombardier Transportation, India president and managing director said: "With this latest order, we continue to consolidate our position to provide support to the railway systems in India."
The equipment will be installed in 72 commuter trains of 12 cars each and after delivery they will be deployed in the phase II (A) of the Mumbai urban transport project.

By GlobalDataThe complete propulsion and electrical equipment for the 72 EMU trains will be delivered to integral coach factory (ICF) in Chennai, India, for installation and pre-commissioning while final commissioning will take place in Mumbai.
The new locomotives will be corrosion-resistant and require less maintenance, as well as more stylish compared to existing fleet of Siemens locomotives, MRVC said.
Deliveries of the equipment will start in the last quarter of 2012 with deliveries expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2014.
The steel trains will be rolled out in phases from December 2013 and all 72 are expected to be rolled out by December 2015.
Out of the total 72 locomotives, 38 will serve the Central Railways, while the remaining 34 will serve the Western Railways.
Bombardier had earlier signed a contract with Delhi Metro Rail (DMRC) in India to supply 74 movia metro cars for € 83m, including a future option to deliver 40 more cars.
