The UK Government has approved plans to construct a new station in Kenilworth, in the West Midlands. The proposal is being granted an investment of £11.3m from the multi-million pound New Stations Fund.

The new station is aimed to improve connectivity for passengers and businesses across the West Midlands.

A £5m has been approved from the fund by the Department for Transport (DfT) after assurance that that the station will be built without affecting other network improvements. The DfT investment is biggest single allocation since the launch of the fund.

Construction of the station will allow new local trains to run between Coventry, Kenilworth and Leamington Spa in December 2016.

"This is further proof of the Government’s determination to transform the network."

UK Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "This will provide real benefits both to passengers and to local businesses, providing improved connectivity across the West Midlands and to London, and helping create jobs.

"This is further proof of the Government’s determination to transform the network through our record levels of investment."

Warwickshire County Council asked McLoughlin to approve the bid in July, subject to viability assessments by Network Rail.

In a statement the Government said future work to improve the network could mean local electric trains running through Kenilworth to Birmingham in 2019.

The New Stations Fund has allocated £13.6m for the construction of new stations since its launch in January 2013. Other successful bids include Lea Bridge (East London), Pye Corner (Wales), Ilkeston (East Midlands), and Newcourt (Devon).
The UK government has invested £38bn in railways from 2014 to 2019 to upgrade and provide better passenger services.
