The 15.5km-long M3 Line of the Ankara Metro communications-based train control (CBTC) project in Turkey has been opened.
With 11 stations operational in discontinuous train protection (DTP) mode, Ankara Metro’s M3 Line forms part of the first of four lines of the CBTC project.

The M3 line starts from the end of line M1 at Batikent to OSB Torekent in Sinçan, Turkey, and was built by a Spanish-Turkish consortium of Comsa Emte and Açilim Insaat at a cost of TRY216m ($99.1m).
The consortium is also working on the 16.6km-long M2 Line, which runs from Kizilay to Çayyolu, Turkey. It is expected to open later this year.
A fleet of 342 stainless-steel metro cars, which will be delivered by CSR Zhuzhou, will operate on lines M3 and M2. The Chinese manufacturer received $412.5m contract for supplying the cars in August 2012.
Ansaldo STS will operate through its subsidiary Ansaldo Segnalamento Ferroviario, in consortium with the Turkish firm Alsim Alarko Sanayi Tesisleri Ve Ticaret. They will design, supply, test and commission the signalling system on M1, M2, M3 and M4 lines of Ankara Underground.

By GlobalDataAnkara Metro CBTC project is expected to be complete by the end of the year, and also covers the renovation of the existing M1 line, construction of M2 and M4 lines to up to 55km and 44 stations, and deploying the CBTC system on 144 trains.
Work under the project also includes additional activation phases such as the DTP opening of M2 line at the beginning of March, the progressive CBTC updating of Lines M1, M3, M2 from the end of 2014 and the opening of the fourth CBTC M4 line in 2015.
