Network Rail has awarded five zero-value civil assessments frameworks worth £300m to cover each of its routes over the next funding period, ‘control period five’.
UK-based Amey won a framework deal to cover civil examinations across the Network Rail’s entire network, with the exception of the London North Western route, which Network Rail is planning to operate with in-house teams. The new contracts are worth over £40m per annum.

Network Rail contracts and procurement director Ian Sexton said: "Monitoring the condition of our infrastructure, including bridges, tunnels, embankments and culverts, is a vital part of keeping Britain’s railways safe.
"By working with these trusted suppliers over the next five years we can continue to improve and build on the knowledge we have of our network."
Aecom and Amey will cover Network Rail’s Anglia, London North Eastern and East Midlands routes, while Aecom, SKM and Opus will cover LNW route. The Sussex, Wales, Wessex and Western all routes will be covered by WSP, while Kent and Scotland routes will be covered by Amey and Aecom respectively.
Furthermore, Network Rail has submitted plans for a new section of railway near Huyton station as part of the £600m Northern Hub investment plan to provide more frequent services across the north of England.

By GlobalDataNetwork Rail area director Martin Frobisher said: "The Northern Hub will transform the railway in the north of England. It will create space for up to 700 more trains every day which will boost capacity and provide better journey options for passengers.
"The plans at Huyton and Roby are a key part of this investment and will help to increase capacity on the line between Liverpool and Manchester."
Work is currently underway to improve capacity between Manchester and Liverpool to increase the number of tracks through Huyton and Roby from two to four.
