The first Class 700 Desiro City train by Siemens has successfully completed a speed test by reaching 100mph at the company’s test track at Wegberg-Wildenrath, Germany.

The test was conducted earlier this month and the first 12-car train will be delivered to Thameslink rail operator First Capital Connect (FCC) and future, long-term owner, Cross London Trains.

FCC has been managing the new trains’ contract with Siemens for the UK Department for Transport (DfT).

Siemens rail systems UK Thameslink Programme director Iain Smith said: "The Class 700 will be required to travel at up to 100mph every day in service, so this rigorous testing process is a fundamental part of the programme.

"This rigorous testing process is a fundamental part of the programme."

"This will ensure reliable performance through Central London when the Thameslink programme is completed."

Siemens’s new Desiro City fleet will allow the transfer of the existing fleets of Class 319 and Class 377 used on Thameslink services to other routes, including newly electrified lines in West London and the north-west of England.

The dual-system train will be capable of carrying 1,750 passengers, providing improved passenger communication and easier access for passengers with reduced mobility.

The Class 700 trains are approximately 25% lighter than previous generations, and are up to 50% more energy efficient.

The UK Government-sponsored £6.5bn Thameslink Programme aims to transform the current layout of the station and create a platform with new tracks, which can operate larger and spacious trains to offer passengers more travel options to new destinations.
