A consortium led by Ansaldo STS has secured a €78m turnkey contract to construct a new metro system in Navi Mumbai, India.

TATA Projects and CSR Zhuzhou make up the rest of the consortium.

The contract includes the design, supply, installation and testing of electromechanical systems on phase one of the Navi Mumbai Metro, which has an 11.1km-long viaduct spanning 11 stations and a depot.

Under the terms of the agreement, Ansaldo is responsible for system integration and the supply of the signalling system and control, telecommunications, automatic fare collection and storage of equipment, based on communications-based train control (CBTC) technology.

Phase one of the rapid transit system will operate a fleet of eight trains. Construction on the project is expected to be completed over the next two and a half years.

The complete Navi Mumbai Metro system will have six high-rail corridors covering a total distance of approximately 117 km, with the two other phases providing a 12.3km-long line and nine stations.

Earlier this month, a joint venture between Ansaldo STS and Instalaciones Inabensa secured a €47m signalling contract from the Spanish Ministry of Development, through ADIF Alta Velocidad.

The contract covers the installation and maintenance of the ERTMS signalling systems on the high-speed line connecting La Robla and Pola de Lena in Spain.
