HS2 Construction managing director Jim Crawford said: "Today’s contract award marks an important milestone as we continue to move towards the start of construction in 2017.

"It is vital that we constantly challenge our suppliers to ensure we deliver long-term value for money for the taxpayer, as well as a world class railway for all our passengers, stakeholders and communities along the line."

In February, UK transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin opened the headquarters for the proposed HS2 project in Birmingham, employing approximately 1,000 staff, including engineers and procurement specialists.

HS2 launched two consultations on its environmental impact assessment (EIA) and equality impact assessment (EQIA) scope and methodology reports for the Phase IIa section of the High Speed 2 (HS2) line.
