BEAM

UK-based Virgin Trains has launched an entertainment system, which allows customers to watch films and TV programmes on demand using their own devices.

The new on-board app Beam has been developed in conjunction with GoMedia. It is streamed directly to customers’ own devices and offers around 200 hours of films, TV episodes, magazines, and games.

The free service involves use of the app through an on-board server and does not require wi-fi or mobile data. Beam content includes popular TV series House of Cards, Poldark, and Fortitude. For kids, there is a separate section with shows such as Peppa Pig, Ben 10, and Horrible Histories.

All Virgin Trains customers can download the app from the Apple or Android store on their phone or tablet before they get on-board and get access to the huge selection of entertainment.

Virgin Trains co-chairman Patrick McCall said: "The new Beam app will make our passengers’ journeys fly by, feeling like they’ve arrived at their destinations before they know it.

"The new service is more advanced than systems currently available on planes as customers use their own devices, which normally have larger screens with better picture quality than standard seat-back devices."
