Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler has won a CHF285m ($292m) contract from Rhaetian Railway (RhB) to deliver 27 new self-powered electric multiple-unit (EMU), with provision for supply of up to a futher 20.
With the first scheduled to commence service in 2019, 76-44m EMUs will be developed at Stadler’s Altenrhein plant in Switzerland,

As the first self-powered trains, they will mainly serve Prättigau and Engadin, as two-carriage units in Prättigau and as individual units from Klosters Platz to St. Moritz and Davos.
The four-car air-conditioned EMUs will feature 35 first and 137 standard class seats, with sufficient space to accommodate skis, sporting equipment, bicycles, prams, and luggage, as well as two wheelchair spaces.
Designed to meet the requirements of the Swiss disability equality act (BehiG), the trains will have extensive low-floor areas and suitable door widths to ensure easy boarding.
The metre-gauge trains will be able to run at an operating speed of 100km/h and a maximum speed of 120km/h.

Once in operation, the new trains will modernise the fleet of RhB significantly, enabling the company to increase its productivity.
