Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) in Saudi Arabia has received the first of the 69 metro trainsets for Riyadh from Alstom.

As a part of FAST consortium, Alstom has handed over the trainset that will circulate on the lines 4, 5 and 6.

The consortium includes FCC, Samsung, Alstom, Strukton and Freyssinet Saudi Arabia.

In 2013, ADA launched a project to build a 176km-long metro network that would include six lines and 85 stations.

Alstom Middle East and Africa senior vice-president Gian Luca Erbacci said: "This landmark project will allow Riyadh residents and visitors to commute aboard a reliable, comfortable and environmentally friendly means of transport.

Alstom will supply a fully integrated metro system for lines 4, 5 and 6.

The metro system includes 69 Metropolis trainsets, as well as Urbalis, Alstom communication based train control signalling solution, the power supply and its energy recovery system Hesop.

Produced in Alstom’s plant in Katowice, Poland, all the trainsets are expected to be delivered by the end of next year.

The 36m-long Riyadh metro trainset is composed of two cars each has the capacity to accommodate up to 231 passengers.

Each train features first, family and single class separated by a glass partition and offers LED lightning and advanced passenger information systems.  

The 100% motorised metro trains will be able to run on gradients of up to a 6% slope and have been designed to run on standard-gauge track at a top speed of 90km/h.
