Automations solutions provider Siemens has received a contract to install Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) for Indian Railways.

IGBT are power electronics for the traction systems of electric and diesel-electric rail vehicles that reduce electricity requirements during operation.

The company noted that the technology is also effective in making the acceleration process more efficient by reducing heat generation and traction noise.

Siemens Mobility executive vice-president and head Tilak Raj Seth said: “The advent of IGBTs has yielded strong efficiency gains in electric drive technology.

“The project showcases Siemens’ partnership with the Indian Railways as it combines innovation with responsibility to bring together the combined expertise of its teams, which are committed to deliver reliable, safe and efficient technologies.”

Siemens will design, supply and carry out the installation of alternating current (AC) traction systems on dual-cab, high-horsepower diesel engine locomotives for Indian Railways' Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) production unit.
