The FASTRACK work includes multiple aspects of the ongoing Subway Action Plan, which aims to address a comprehensive range of incidents that cause delays in the system, including signals, track and power issues.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman Joseph Lhota said: “The NYC Subway Action Plan marks the beginning of a new chapter for the MTA and provides an opportunity to stabilise and improve the system, while integrating its components into successful programmes that are already in place like FASTRACK.”

Workers are set to carry out multiple tasks as part of the Q line renovation programme, including the repair and replacement of track, third rail, and electrical and signalling components.

The whole project is aligned with the Subway Action Plan that aims to improve rider experience by enhancing reliability, capacity and safety along the network.

The plan will include a wide-ranging signal repairs programme and the introduction of an emergency Water Management Initiative to seal leaks with chemical grouting within the system, in addition to the cleaning of street grates.

Additionally, plans have been outlined to expedite repair work of potential track issues across the entire underground track as part of the initiative, as well as the maintenance of associated railway infrastructure.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo previously launched the ‘Keep it Clean’ initiative last week, which is intended to eliminate littering in the subway system.
