Sapphire has secured a rail engineering contract worth approximately RMB276m ($42.27m) for the second phase of the Beijing Metro's Changping Line in China.

The deal will see Sapphire’s fully owned engineering, procurement and construction subsidiary Ranken Railway Construction Group carry out a variety of civil engineering works along part of the 12.6km, 12-station Changping Line's South Extension region.

The contracted works are expected to be completed by 31 December 2020.

Sapphire Group CEO and managing director Teh Wing Kwan said: “This new contract in Beijing expands Ranken’s role in one of the world’s busiest metro networks, given continual improvement of rail infrastructure in the top-tier Chinese cities.”

The scope of work includes engineering works along a 675.2m-long interval between south Xi’erqi Station and Qinghe Station.

The agreement will also see the construction of new 400m north and 574m south sections that will lead to Qinghe Station as a part of the Beijing Metro Line 19, which is currently under development.

Ranken was awarded the RMB308m ($47m) combined civil engineering and design consultancy contract for the rail infrastructure developments in July.

The contracted works relate to Taiyuan City’s Metro Line 2 and Ningbo rail transit line, and will also see the company assume responsibility for the supervision of metro construction projects in Chengdu and Hefei.

Sapphire is an investment management and holding company incorporated in Singapore, which is primarily engaged in operations within the rail and infrastructure engineering and construction sectors.

The company acquired the China-based integrated rail transport business Ranken Infrastructure in October 2015.
