Indore Metro is an urban transportation project being developed by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail in Indore in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India.

The project is being undertaken with an estimated investment of $1.2bn. Construction work began in 2019.

The trial run for the 6.3km super priority corridor under phase one of the project is expected in September 2023. Phase one is expected to be fully completed by December 2024.

The metro rail project will reduce traffic congestion and travel time for city commuters while providing a safe and comfortable transportation service. The project corridors will integrate several modes of transportation including rail stations, bus stops, intermediate public transportation and non-motorised transportation.

Indore Metro project lines and route details

The Indore Metro project will have four main lines and a ballastless standard gauge track of 1,435mm.

Line 1 or the Red Line will run from Sri Aurobindo Hospital to Collectorate Office, from where it will bifurcate into two different lines: 1A and 1B. Line 1A will extend from Collectorate Office to Indore Bypass 1 and include 18 stations, while Line 1B will extend from Collectorate Office to Regional Park and include 13 stations.

The 28.9km Line 2 or the Purple Line will be built between Dewas Naka and MHOW.

Line 3 or the Yellow Line will be a 31.46km ring line, which will include a 28.33km elevated section and a 3.22km underground section. It will connect heavily populated areas such as Bengali Square, Vijay Nagar, Bhawarsala, Airport and Palasia.

The Yellow Line will have 29 stations including 23 elevated and six underground stations. It is expected to be extended as Line 3S with a length of 15.1km from Bengali Square to Indore Bypass 3.

The 16.9km-long Line 4 or the Blue Line will be constructed from MR 9 to Indore Bypass 4 and include 16 stations.

Indore Metro will feature a communication-based train control signalling system. The metro stations will be installed with platform screen doors.

Indore Metro phase one details

Phase one includes the construction of Line 3, which will be along Gandhi Nagar, Bhawarsala, Radisson Square, Bengali Square, Indore Railway Station and Rajwada Palace, up to the Airport.

The initial development of the Yellow Line includes the construction of a 16.19km priority corridor between Gandhi Nagar and Radisson Square comprising 16 stations and a depot at Gandhi Nagar.

Construction is being prioritised on the 6.3km super priority corridor between Gandhi Nagar and the Super Corridor metro station.

As of April 2023, 87% of the piling work for all the viaducts of the priority corridor has been completed.

Rolling stock details

The train sets for the Indore Metro will be ultramodern and lightweight with an operational speed of 80km/h. Phase one will operate 25 Alstom Movia metro passenger trainsets of three-car configuration. The metro car will be 22m long and 2.9m wide.

The trains will feature an air suspension-based system to provide enhanced ride comfort for passengers and a propulsion system with regenerative braking. The train coaches will be air-conditioned and feature a germ control system, fire/smoke detection system and CCTV surveillance.

Financing

The Government of India and the State of Madhya Pradesh are contributing equally towards the financing of the project.

The Asian Development Bank and the New Development Bank (NDB) are providing funds for the project under a parallel co-financing arrangement. NDB is financing 18.8% of the total project cost amounting to $225m.

Contractors involved

A consortium of DB Engineering and Consulting, Geodata Engineering and Louis Berger was appointed as the general consultant for the project. DB Engineering and Consulting is a railway consulting firm, while Geodata Engineering is an engineering survey and civil engineering solutions provider whereas Louis Berger is a professional services provider.

Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, received a letter of acceptance in January 2023 for checking the structural design of the segmental box-girder superstructure of the metro project.

In December 2022, Jindal Steel & Power received a contract to supply head-hardened rails.

MPMR awarded the contract for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of ballastless standard gauge track for the Yellow Line to a joint venture of Texmaco Rail and Engineering (TRE) and ISC Projects in December 2022. TRE is an engineering and infrastructure company, while ISC Projects is an infrastructure company.

Rail infrastructure company Vossloh Cogifer received a contract for the design, manufacturing and supply of standard gauge turnouts in November 2022.

In July 2022, Kalpataru Power Transmission (KPT) was awarded the contract for the design, installation and commissioning of a power supply receiving substation, traction substation and auxiliary substation along with a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. Based in India, KPT is an engineering, procurement and construction services provider for the power transmission and infrastructure sector.

Transport solutions provider Alstom was contracted to supply 75 Movia passenger trainsets for the Indore Metro, along with the installation of signalling and telecommunication systems. The contract also includes the provision of 15 years of comprehensive maintenance services. The production of the first Movia trains commenced in March 2023.

The contract for the construction of the rolling stock depot and workshop at Gandhi Nagar was awarded to K S M Bashir Mohammad and Sons, a construction services provider, in February 2022.

In September 2021, MPMR awarded two civil contracts to Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) for the construction of an elevated viaduct and seven elevated metro stations of the project. RVNL is a special-purpose vehicle established by the Indian government to undertake rail infrastructure development projects.

Project delivery consultancy Assystem Stup is partnering with RVNL to provide design consultancy services for 11km of elevated viaduct and 16 elevated metro stations.

Ardanuy Ingeniería and Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) were contracted to provide detailed design for a rolling stock depot, in addition to a power supply distribution and SCADA system in November 2020. Ardanuy Ingeniería is an engineering consulting firm and RITES is an engineering consultancy.

In October 2018, the contract for the design and construction of a 5.3km-long elevated viaduct connecting ISBT and Mumtaj Bagh Colony excluding stations was awarded to Dilip Buildcon, a construction and infrastructure development company.

Rohit Associates Architects and Engineers, an engineering consulting company, Rakshak Securitas, a manpower services provider, and Insight Brandcom, a marketing and communications agency, are some of the other contractors involved in the project.

Consultants for Rural Area Development Linked Economy, a consulting services provider, Cengrs, a geotechnical engineering consulting firm and C.E Testing, an engineering consulting company, are also involved in the Indore Metro project.
