A contract for the development of a new genset locomotive has been signed by Russia’s Yakutia Railways and Swiss company Molinari Rail.
The new genset locomotive will be developed by Molinari, in partnership with Sinara Transport Machines. Yakutia shortlisted the Swiss firm in a competitive tender process in May.
Sinara’s TE8 locomotive platform will form the basis for the new genset locomotive.
Yakutia Railways technical director Aleksandr Kurchatov said: "This is an important project for us and the Russian Far East. It allows us to receive locomotives that will operate in the harsh climate conditions, as well as our current and future operational requirements.
"This project opens a new chapter in the Russian rail industry, as no comparable locomotive is available on the market."
Yakutia is a rolling stock operator and a railroad infrastructure owner, with its fleet comprised mainline and shunting diesel electric locomotives.
